Fire Chief Rick Sanderson

Rick Sanderson currently serves as the Fire Chief of the White Settlement Fire Department, a role he accepted on April 26, 2023, following his retirement from the Irving (TX) Fire Department after nearly 36 years of service. Rick began his career with the Irving Fire Department on June 15, 1987, steadily rising through the ranks. Over his distinguished career, he held multiple supervisory positions, including several years as a Chief Officer. His responsibilities included managing both the Training Branch and Fire Dispatch Branch during his tenure as an administrative Battalion Chief. Before his retirement, Rick spent his last years in the field as an Operations Battalion Chief, with over 14 years of supervisory experience.

Rick holds several certifications from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, including Master Structure Fire Fighter, Fire Officer IV, and Instructor III - Master. His dedication to continuous learning and leadership development is further reflected in his attainment of two prestigious designations. He earned the Fire Service Chief Executive Officer (FSCEO) certification through the TEEX program, which provides advanced professional development for fire service executives in partnership with Texas A&M’s Mays Business School. He also earned the Certified Fire Executive (CFE) designation through the Texas Fire Chiefs Academy, demonstrating his commitment to excellence in fire service leadership.

Outside of his professional achievements, Rick’s life is driven by three great passions: his faith, his family, and the fire service. His faith guided him to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies / Pastoral Ministry from Criswell College. He has been married to his wife, Amy, for over 25 years. Together, they have raised four children and enjoyed life together. Although eligible for retirement, Rick’s passion for the fire service continues to drive him, as he remains committed to mentoring and supporting the next generation of firefighters, preserving the traditions of the fire service for years to come.
